“In this life, in this place, I couldn't afford to have too many dreams. But the few that I allowed myself were strong. I wanted to see Mr. Mandela walk free, and that has happened. I wanted to vote for my own president, and that has happened. I wanted to see apartheid die, and even that has happened. Now, something that I thought was too impossible even to dream about has happened. I have a house. I have a home. I am complete."

Jane Mohlambi (deceased 2005), Habitat for Humanity South Africa Homeowner

Jane has left a legacy of a decent home for her family in Orange Farm, Gauteng, South Africa through her ability to dream. Her willingness to participate in “Isidima” (dignity building) and “Ilima” (community sweat equity) provides inspiration for others in need. She became a complete restored person when she moved into her simple home built, with love, by many diverse volunteers. This is the power we all have to transform people positively when we give of ourselves especially of our time and money. Jane captures the hope of each person in the world who is trying to escape poverty.

“The programme helped to provide support for Sri Lankans affected by the Asian tsunami in numerous ways.  It provided vital funds to build houses for families whose lives had been devastated and were left destitute.  More importantly, it also gave hope to people in their desperate hour of need, as by getting personally involved with them in rebuilding these communities, the volunteers proved that someone out there actually cared about their predicament.”

“My daughters were living with me when they died. So I care for the grandchildren. I have no food and no clothes for them. We are surviving on just the little I get from my pension. I have no money for the house. I want to say thank you very much for building me a new home. Sometimes I worry about when I die. Now I know all of the children will stay in a safe place. At night I can’t sleep because I am so excited about this house. Thank you so much.”

Joyce Mncwabe (new Habitat for Humanity home owner).

“When I was in Chinnakottakuppam last week, I was walking with one of the little girls, Sumitra.  She grabbed my hand and said, "Please come to my house.  Beautiful.  Beautiful house."  She wouldn't let go until I actually stepped inside her house and admired it.  It truly was beautiful.  She wouldn't stop smiling and I couldn't stop crying.”

"Last week I had the opportunity to show some friends from Boulder who were in Bangalore for a wedding, the houses we worked on in Hassehalli.  One of the homeowner's took me aside and through an interpreter said, "Very thanks.  Many people help us and to be so kind.  Very thanks."  I know it isn't eloquent but it was so heartfelt, and I'll take that any day. She clasped my hands as she spoke with so much tenderness in her voice.”
